Barani Agri. Research Station, Fateh Jang

Barani Agricultural Research Station, Fatehjang was established during 1993. It is situated on Kohat road 6 km away from Fatehjang city and about 50 km west of the capital city Islamabad. Total area of this research station is 33.68 Acres. The Station was established to carry out research for the development of crop varieties suitable for rainfed areas to get maximum production. To achieve this target research work was started for the development of high yielding and drought tolerant genotypes of important crops like wheat, chickpea, brassica, lentil, millet and sorghum.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Research Station are:    

  • Collection, maintenance and evaluation of germplasm of different crops for utilization in hybridization programme.
  • Development of high yielding, drought tolerant and disease resistant crop varieties of wheat, chickpea and sorghum.
  • Standardization of appropriate production technologies for field crops.

Varieties

BARS-09 is a semi dwarf, rust resistant, drought tolerant and high yielding wheat variety developed as a result of consistent breeding efforts from the year 1999-2007 at Barani Agricultural Research Station (BARS), Fatehjang, Pakistan. The variety was developed from the cross “PFAU/SERI//BOW” and selected from the 16th Semi Arid Wheat Screening Nursery. BARS-09 is a semi-dwarf (95-98 cm) variety, shorter in height than Chakwal-97 and GA-2002. Plant is erect with prostrate habit and has medium wax. Number of days for 50 percent heading are 120-130 while days to 50 percent maturity are 160-175, so it is a medium duration genotype. It produces large number of productive tillers (480/m2). Stem is stiff as compared to GA-2002 and has 3-4 nodes per stem. Leaves are planophile. Ear is slightly tapering, medium lax and 10-12 cm long. Glume shoulder shape is square. Rachis is long (9-11cm) with 18-20 segments. Awn colour is yellowish white as compared to white in Chakwal-97. Beak is medium in size and straight in shape. Seed colour is amber, seed brush is short. Its seed is medium bold in size (41.17 g) with 6-8 mm length, 3-4 mm width and 2-3 mm thickness. This variety has high level of resistance against lodging and shattering. It has also shown good performance under moisture and freezing stress conditions. It has desirable features of early ground cover, high growth rate and high tillering capacity.

Fatehjang-2016 is a drought tolerant, rust resistant and high yielding wheat variety with erect growth habit developed by Barani Agricultural Research Station, Fatehjang for rainfed areas. The variety was developed from the local cross “ERA F 2000 /4/ FONG CHAN #3 / TRT’S’//VEE#9/3/COOK/ VEE’S’// DOVE’S ’/ SERI” attempted at BARS during 2003-04. Fatehjang-2016 is a medium tall (105-110 cm) variety, taller in height than BARS-09 & Dharabi-11. Seedling growth habit is semi erect with no anthocyanin pigment. Coleoptile color is white. Plant is erect with medium wax. Stem is stiff as compared to BARS-09 and has 5-6 nodes per stem. Leaves are erectophile in nature. Flag leaves have medium twist and strong sheath wax. Ear emergence takes in 118-15 days. It is a medium duration variety which matures in 166-175 days. It produces large number of productive tillers (145-168) per meter. Ears are medium in size (11-15 cm), tapering in shape, yellowish white in colour with long and yellowish white awns. Rachis is long (10-12 cm) with 17-20 segments. Glume length is long (10-13 mm) and shoulder shape is slopping with narrow width. Beak is long and straight. Its seed is bold in size with 6-7 mm length, 3-3.8 mm width and 3-3.2 mm thickness. Seed is amber red with opaque surface and ovate in shape. Seed brush is short. Seed has medium bush, long seed germ size with intermediate groove. 1000-grain weight of this variety is high (47.5g). Seeds are high in grain protein (15.6%db), wet gluten (32.5%) and have high test weight (78.2 kg/hl). Fatehjang-2016 showed resistance against lodging and shattering. Its performance under moisture and freezing stress situations was also excellent.

Research Activities

At present our station is conducting 25 experiments/trials for rabi (2017-18) for the improvement of wheat, chickpea, lentil and brassica which are widely grown in Fatehjang and surrounding areas. The research plan includes experiments on germplasm enrichment/evaluation of wheat, chickpea and sorghum; improvement of these crops through hybridization work and evaluation of promising lines in various trials (A, B, Micro and National). Moreover, refinement of production technology for advance lines/candidate varieties is also being carried out by conducting agronomic trials like sowing date studies, seed rate studies and fertilizer requirement trials. Target crops for the hybridization work are wheat, chickpea (kabuli) and sorghum while adaptation/evaluation trials are conducted for different crops including brassica, lentil, chickpea (desi), millet, mung, mash, soybean etc. Moreover, Screening of wheat materials received in the form of nurseries / trials from different National (WRI, Faisalabad, NARC, Isd) and International (CIMMYT and ICARDA) organizations/institutes for disease resistance (especially against Yr) and yield assessment is also performed.  

Achievements

  • Two high yielding, drought tolerant and disease resistant varieties of wheat (BARS-09 & Fatehjang-2016) were developed for Barani areas of Punjab.
  • Wheat, Chickpea (Kabuli) and Sorghum gene pools comprising of 150, 90 and 80 genotypes respectively are available.
  • Hundred (100) successful crosses among selected wheat genotypes were performed during 2016-17 to incorporate durable resistance against rusts via Yr18/Lr34 and Sr2/Yr30, drought tolerance and high yield.
  • One advance wheat line 13FJ35 is contributed to NUWYT (RF) 2017-18 and three elite wheat lines are included in Micro Yield Trial (RF) 2017-18.
  • Exotic germplasm of wheat received from CIMMYT & ICARDA were screened against yellow rust disease.
  • Exotic germplasm of chickpea received from ICARDA were screened against Aschocyta Blight disease.
  • Moreover, research material /lines of wheat received from various national institutes like National Wheat Disease Screening Nursery received from NARC, Islamabad and Wheat Disease Screening Nursery received from Wheat Research Institute, Faisalabad were screened against yellow rust.
  • In addition, various chickpea trials (Preliminary, Regular, Cooperative, Advance, Micro and National Yield Trials for both Kabuli and Desi), Lentil trials (Advance, Micro and National Uniform Yield Trials) were also conducted for the testing of yield performance and adaptability.
  • Exotic germplasm of wheat received from CIMMYT & ICARDA were screened against yellow rust disease.
  • Olive plantation was accomplished on 364 acres (51644 plants) in tehsil Fatehjang and 100 acres (12550 plants) in tehsil Pindigheb. Further 435 acres of land has been surveyed for olive plantation in the above mentioned tehsils.

Services

  • Seed supply of advance/approved varieties of wheat, chickpea, sorghum etc to the farmers in limited quantity during rabi and kharif season.
  • Advisory services are provided about production technology and plant protection of rabi and kharif crops especially for rainfed areas to the farming community.
  • Survey of farmer’s fields suitable for Olive plantation in tehsil Fatehjang and Pindigheb.
